mike wetz was born in 1975 near dayton, ohio where he currently lives and works.
his drive is the struggle between concept and subconscious, the ancient and the undiscovered mind. internationally known for his work that melds apparitions of modern architecture and the subconscious subtext into a dream-like synthesis. the schematic compositions hold up through an existential lens, subservient to the system in which the nature of the complex imagery presents the viewer with a deeply personal and subtle truth about our own enigmatic existences.
in his paintings and drawings, wetz’s motifs can range from the anatomy of the robotic meat puppet to views of urban landscapes to the even more indecipherable enigmatic seemingly dysfunctional inner workings of the universe. his paintings hold several tensions in balance: scientific and the absurdity. ghostly transfigurations of classic literature and popular culture are absorbed by rough strokes of the painter’s brush, stitching together dimensions otherwise unimaginable.
all of wetz’s works seem to enjoy circuitous themes, without single entry or exit points and with a strange, almost absurd syntax of an expanded schematic of a plane crash. his paintings have been described as “perfectly disjointed” and “inconclusively genius”. with his striking compositions and vivid surfaces wetz has proved to be among the more original voices in contemporary painting.
his interest in exploration of systems and the origins of existence give his work the broad scope of existentialist literature and philosophy without chaining it to the explaination. somewhere off-set and out of range of academic painting, wetz’s work is drenched in mystery.
